If you live in Airdrie or Cochrane, you have probably noticed that finding a reliable tree service can be tricky. Many companies based in Calgary proper treat jobs outside city limits as an afterthought — if they serve the area at all. Aardvark Tree Care is different. We work throughout the greater Calgary region, and Airdrie and Cochrane are two of the communities we serve most regularly.
Why Airdrie and Cochrane Need Specialized Tree Care
Both communities have grown rapidly over the past two decades. Airdrie's population has more than doubled since the early 2000s, and Cochrane has experienced similar growth. That means thousands of homes were built in former agricultural land where mature trees are scarce and newly planted trees are still establishing.
At the same time, the older neighbourhoods in both towns — like Airdrie's Jensen and Cochrane's historic downtown area — have mature trees that are reaching the age where they need more attention. Large cottonwoods, aging elms, and overgrown spruce are common in these areas, and many of them have never been professionally pruned.
Common Tree Issues in Airdrie
Airdrie sits on the open prairie north of Calgary, fully exposed to wind from every direction. This wind exposure creates specific challenges for trees:
- Wind lean: Trees that have grown with a persistent lean toward the southeast due to prevailing northwest winds. Structural pruning can help balance the canopy and reduce the risk of failure.
- Desiccation damage: Winter winds pull moisture from evergreen needles faster than frozen roots can replace it, causing browning and needle drop. Proper fall watering is critical.
- New-development tree care: Many homes in Airdrie's newer neighbourhoods like Ravenswood, Bayview, and Midtown came with builder-planted trees that were installed too deep, staked too long, or are simply the wrong species for the site.
Common Tree Issues in Cochrane
Cochrane's position in the Bow River valley gives it a different microclimate. The valley floor collects cold air in winter, creating temperature inversions that can be several degrees colder than surrounding areas. At the same time, Cochrane gets direct chinook impact from the west.
- Chinook stress: The rapid freeze-thaw cycles caused by chinook winds are particularly hard on tree bark and root systems. Sunscald on the south and west sides of trunks is common.
- Riverbank properties: Homes near the Bow River often have large cottonwoods and balsam poplars. These trees grow fast but produce weak wood and aggressive roots. Managing them requires regular pruning and sometimes removal.
- Acreage tree management: The acreages south and west of Cochrane often have stands of native aspen and spruce that need thinning, fire-smarting, or hazard tree removal.
