The Best Trees to Plant in Calgary

November 25, 2025

Planting a tree in Calgary is a long-term investment. Choose well and you will enjoy decades of shade, beauty, and increased property value. Choose poorly and you will spend years battling a tree that never quite thrives in our climate. Calgary sits in USDA hardiness zone 3b (Agriculture Canada zone 3a), which means winter temperatures can plunge below minus 40. Add chinook winds, alkaline clay soil, and intense summer sun, and it becomes clear that not every tree is suited to life here.

Large Shade Trees

Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa)

If you have the space, the bur oak is one of the finest trees you can plant in Calgary. It is native to the prairies, tolerates our alkaline soils, and develops a massive, spreading canopy that provides dense shade. Bur oaks are slow growers, but they can live for centuries. Plant one and you are planting a legacy tree.

Green Ash — Prairie Spire or Patmore

Green ash cultivars remain popular in Calgary for good reason. They grow relatively quickly, tolerate drought, and produce a symmetrical, upright crown. The Patmore variety has been a staple in Calgary for decades. Be aware that the emerald ash borer has not yet reached Alberta, but it is spreading westward across Canada. Monitoring is essential.

American Elm — Brandon or Discovery

Disease-resistant cultivars of American elm thrive in Calgary. The Brandon elm, developed at the Agriculture Canada research station in Brandon, Manitoba, is perfectly adapted to prairie conditions. It grows into a classic vase shape and provides exceptional shade. These are excellent boulevard and front-yard trees.

Medium Trees

Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra)

The Ohio buckeye produces beautiful white flower clusters in spring and has a dense, rounded canopy. It does well in Calgary's clay soil and tolerates partial shade. It tops out around 10 to 12 metres, making it a good fit for moderate-sized yards.

Amur Cherry (Prunus maackii)

Valued for its stunning coppery, peeling bark, the Amur cherry is one of the most ornamental trees you can grow in Calgary. It reaches about eight to 10 metres and produces small white flowers in spring. This tree adds four-season interest to any yard.

Japanese Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata)

Technically a large shrub that can be trained as a single-stem tree, the Japanese tree lilac blooms with huge creamy-white flower clusters in late June. It is extremely hardy, compact at six to eight metres, and virtually pest-free. An excellent choice for smaller front yards.

Evergreens

Colorado Spruce (Picea pungens)

The blue-tinted needles of the Colorado spruce are iconic on Calgary streets. This tree provides year-round colour, excellent wind screening, and grows well in our alkaline soils. Give it space — mature specimens can reach 15 metres tall with a broad conical form. It should not be planted too close to the house.

Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris)

With its distinctive orange-barked upper branches and open, irregular crown, the Scots pine adds character to any landscape. It is very cold-hardy and drought-tolerant once established. It works well as an accent tree or in groupings for a naturalized look.

Trees to Avoid

Not every tree sold at Calgary garden centres is a good fit for the long term. These species come with significant drawbacks:

Planting Tips for Calgary

Regardless of species, success starts with proper planting. Dig the hole two to three times wider than the root ball but no deeper. The root flare — where the trunk widens at the base — should sit at or just above grade. Backfill with the same soil you removed; amending the hole with rich compost can discourage roots from spreading outward. Water deeply at planting and throughout the first two growing seasons.

Mulch with wood chips in a ring around the base, keeping the mulch a few inches away from the trunk. Stake only if the tree cannot stand upright on its own, and remove stakes after the first growing season.
