Trees in urban and suburban Calgary yards face challenges that forest trees never encounter. Compacted soil, removed leaf litter, competition with turf grass, and limited root space all conspire to rob trees of the nutrients they need. Deep root fertilization is one of the most effective ways to address this, and it is far more targeted than spreading granular fertilizer on the surface.

What Is Deep Root Fertilization?

Deep root fertilization is a process where a liquid nutrient solution is injected directly into the soil around a tree's root zone using a specialized hydraulic probe. The probe penetrates 8 to 12 inches below the surface, delivering a slow-release fertilizer blend right where the tree's feeder roots are concentrated. The injection process also aerates the soil, breaking up compaction and improving water infiltration.

Unlike surface-applied fertilizers, which primarily benefit the lawn and may never reach tree roots below the turf layer, deep root injection puts nutrients exactly where the tree can access them.

How the Process Works

A certified arborist starts by assessing the tree's species, size, health, and soil conditions. Based on this assessment, they select the appropriate fertilizer blend, which typically includes nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients like iron, manganese, and zinc.

The probe is inserted into the soil at multiple points in a grid pattern throughout the root zone. The root zone extends roughly from the trunk out to the drip line, which is the outer edge of the canopy, and often well beyond. For a mature tree, this can mean dozens of injection points to ensure even distribution.

At each point, the pressurized solution fractures compacted soil as it enters, creating small channels that improve drainage and oxygen flow. The entire process takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tree depending on size and typically leaves only small, barely noticeable holes in the lawn.

When Does a Tree Need It?

Not every tree requires deep root fertilization, but several conditions common in Calgary yards make it highly beneficial:

Best Time for Deep Root Fertilization in Calgary

The ideal windows are spring, from late April through May, or fall, from September through mid-October. Spring applications fuel the growing season, while fall applications help trees store energy for winter and support strong root growth that continues even after leaves drop.

Avoid fertilizing during the heat of mid-summer when trees are already under drought stress, and never fertilize frozen ground as the solution cannot penetrate properly.

What Results to Expect

Deep root fertilization is not an overnight fix. You will typically start seeing improvements within a few weeks to a couple of months. Leaves become darker green and fuller. Twig growth extends further. The canopy fills in more densely over the following growing season. With consistent treatment every one to two years, trees show significantly improved vigour and resilience.

Why Surface Fertilizer Is Not Enough

Spreading fertilizer on the lawn surface does benefit grass, but the nutrients rarely penetrate deep enough to reach tree root zones, especially in compacted clay. Much of the surface application is also consumed by the grass itself before it can migrate downward. Deep root injection bypasses these barriers entirely, delivering a concentrated dose right to the absorbing roots.

If your trees are showing signs of stress or you simply want to give them the best chance at long, healthy life in Calgary's challenging conditions, deep root fertilization is one of the most impactful investments you can make.
