Yellow Leaves With Green Veins: Iron Chlorosis in Calgary's Alkaline Soil

There is a very specific look that tells an experienced eye almost instantly what is wrong: leaves that turn yellow while the network of veins stays a distinct dark green. In practical terms there is usually plenty of iron present in the ground. The problem is chemistry: at high pH, that iron converts into forms that are essentially insoluble, and roots cannot absorb iron they cannot dissolve.

So the tree slowly starves for iron while literally standing in iron-rich soil, which is a genuinely counterintuitive situation. The Species Most Affected

The classic, diagnostic sign is interveinal chlorosis: yellow tissue in the spaces between veins that themselves stay green, giving the leaf a green skeleton on a yellow background. It usually appears worst on the newest leaves at the branch tips, because iron does not move around freely inside the tree and the fresh growth cannot pull it back from older leaves.

In more severe or long-running cases the yellow deepens toward near-white, the leaf edges scorch and turn brown, leaf size shrinks, and whole branches begin to die back from the tips. Catching the problem at the early yellowing stage gives you far more options and a far better outcome than waiting until the tree is dropping branches, when recovery becomes slower and less certain.

How We Actually Correct It

Simply spreading iron on the soil surface often fails, and it is a common way people waste money on this. The same high pH that locked up the native iron will lock up the new iron just as fast. The more dependable fixes are chelated iron products, which are formulated so the iron stays available even at high pH, and trunk injections that deliver iron directly into the tree's vascular system and bypass the soil entirely.

Soil-applied chelates and trunk injections each have their place, and the right choice depends on the species, the size of the tree, and how far the chlorosis has already advanced. This is very much a situation where matching the treatment to the specific tree makes the difference between a green, recovering canopy and another wasted season of the same frustrating yellow.

A Long-Term Approach

Because you cannot practically change the underlying chemistry of your whole yard, managing chlorosis is usually about ongoing support rather than a single permanent cure. The goal is to keep the tree functioning and green while working with the soil you have, not pretending you can rebuild it. Mulching, sensible watering, and keeping fresh sources of lime away from the roots all help hold the line.

That means avoiding things that push soil pH even higher near the tree, such as new concrete, mortar wash, or crushed limestone landscaping right over the root zone.
