Every spring a certain set of Calgary trees leafs out looking wrong. The side facing the street is thin or bare, the leaves that do open have scorched brown margins, and the evergreens along the sidewalk are brown on the road side and green on the yard side.
That pattern is salt injury, and it comes from two directions: spray thrown up by traffic onto branches and needles, and salt-laden meltwater soaking into the root zone. The two look different and call for different responses.
Spray Damage Versus Soil Damage
Spray damage is directional. Salt-laden slush thrown by vehicles coats the branches and buds on the street-facing side, killing buds and scorching needle tips. The result is a tree that is noticeably one-sided, with the injury sharply limited to the exposure.
Soil damage is not directional. Salt accumulating in the root zone interferes with the tree's ability to take up water, so the whole canopy shows symptoms: marginal leaf scorch, smaller leaves, early fall colour, twig dieback, and general thinning that gets worse each year.
Why Salt Hurts a Tree
Sodium and chloride in the soil change how water moves. High salt concentrations make it physically harder for roots to draw water in, so a tree standing in moist soil can show classic drought symptoms.
Sodium also degrades soil structure over time, collapsing the pore space that roots need for air, and chloride taken up in quantity is directly toxic to leaf tissue. In a boulevard strip that receives salt every winter for years, the effect accumulates.
Which Trees Suffer Most
Evergreens on boulevards take the worst of the spray damage, because their needles are exposed all winter and hold the salt through the season. Spruce and pine along arterial roads often show a clear brown road side by March.
Among deciduous trees, sensitivity varies widely. Some species tolerate salt reasonably well, which is why species choice matters enormously for anything planted in a narrow strip beside a road that gets plowed and salted.
What Homeowners Can Do
Watering matters more than anything else. A deep soak in early spring, once the ground has thawed, helps flush accumulated salts down through the root zone and out of reach, particularly in our clay where drainage is slow.
Reduce what you contribute. Use sand or grit for traction where you can, apply ice melt sparingly rather than by the scoopful, and shovel first so you need less product. Where you pile snow matters too: dumping salted driveway snow onto a tree's root zone concentrates everything in one place.
Barriers and Placement
A physical barrier of burlap on a frame between the road and a vulnerable evergreen intercepts spray, and it works well for young trees in exposed locations. It has to be in place before the first plowing and removed in spring.
For new plantings, set the tree back from the curb as far as the space allows and choose a species with known salt tolerance. A metre of extra distance makes a measurable difference to how much spray reaches the foliage.
Recovering a Damaged Tree
Spray-damaged buds do not recover, but the tree usually pushes new growth from further back, so a one-sided tree often fills in over a couple of seasons if the exposure is reduced. Soil salt damage takes longer and depends on flushing and on rainfall.
Keep a damaged tree well watered through the following summer, mulch the root zone, and avoid extra stress like heavy pruning.
