Spring watering sets up your trees for the entire growing season. Get it right and they enter summer with deep, healthy roots and full leaf canopy. Get it wrong and you'll spend the rest of the year playing catch-up.
Here's a Calgary-specific schedule from snowmelt through June.
When to Start Watering
Start watering as soon as the ground thaws — usually mid-to-late April in Calgary. Don't wait for trees to leaf out. Roots are active well before the canopy responds, and pre-leaf watering kickstarts the season.
Specifically, check if you can push a long screwdriver 15-20 cm into the soil at the drip line. If you can, the soil is thawed and ready for water.
How Much: The Calgary Rule of Thumb
A general rule: 10 litres of water per week for every 2.5 cm of trunk diameter, measured at chest height.
- Small trees (under 5 cm trunk): 20 litres per week
- Medium trees (10 cm trunk): 40-50 litres per week
- Large trees (25+ cm trunk): 100+ litres per week
These numbers assume normal spring weather. Increase them in dry spells, decrease after heavy rain.
Watering Method: Slow and Deep
The biggest mistake Calgary homeowners make is watering lightly and often. That builds a shallow root system that can't survive summer drought.
Instead, water slowly and deeply once or twice per week. Use a soaker hose, drip irrigation, or a watering bag wrapped around the trunk. The goal is to get water 30-45 cm deep into the soil, which is where the bulk of feeder roots live.
A quick test: water for 30 minutes, then push a screwdriver into the soil at the drip line. If it slides in easily 30 cm, you've watered enough. If it stops short, water longer.
Don't Forget Conifers
Evergreens are easy to overlook in spring because they don't drop leaves or push obvious new growth. But conifers transpire all winter and often enter spring drier than deciduous trees.
Water spruce, pine, and fir generously in April and May, especially if they're in exposed locations or have shown winter burn (browning of needles on the windward side).
Specific Schedule by Month
- Late April: Initial deep watering as soon as the ground thaws. Focus on newly planted trees and conifers. One thorough soak.
- May: Weekly deep watering for newly planted trees (under 3 years), every 10-14 days for established trees. Increase if no rain for more than a week.
- June: Continue weekly for young trees. For established trees, monitor and water during dry stretches. June often brings heavy rain in Calgary, so adjust based on what nature provides.
Mulch Your Investment
Before summer arrives, top up mulch to a 7-10 cm depth around every tree, keeping it 10 cm away from the trunk. Mulch in May does more for tree health than any amount of fertilizer.
It conserves water, moderates soil temperature, and prevents the weed and turf competition that robs trees of moisture.
Spring watering is when you make the deposits. Summer is when the tree spends them. Skip the deposits and the account runs dry.
