Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal: Which Do You Need?

After a tree comes down, you are left staring at the stump. It sits there, taking up space, collecting rainwater, and slowly becoming a tripping hazard. You know it needs to go, but when you start looking into your options, you quickly discover there are two very different approaches: stump grinding and full stump removal. They are not the same thing, and choosing the wrong one can cost you time and money.

What Is Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding uses a specialized machine with a rotating cutting wheel that chips away the stump and surface roots. The grinder works the stump down to a depth of 15 to 30 centimetres below the soil surface. The result is a hole filled with wood chips and mulch where the stump used to be.

The roots are left in the ground. They will decompose naturally over the next several years. Depending on the species, this process takes anywhere from three to ten years for the major roots to fully break down.

What Is Full Stump Removal?

Full stump removal means extracting the entire stump and the major root system from the ground. This is a much more involved process that typically requires heavy equipment such as an excavator or backhoe. The area is dug out, the root ball is pulled, and the hole is backfilled with soil.

Which Method Is Right for You?

For most Calgary homeowners, stump grinding is the right choice. It handles the vast majority of residential situations efficiently and affordably. Here are the scenarios where each method makes the most sense:

What About Chemical Stump Removal?

You may have seen products at garden centres that claim to dissolve stumps. These typically contain potassium nitrate, which accelerates decomposition. While they do work eventually, "eventually" means one to three years. The stump softens and breaks down, but it is not a quick fix. For most homeowners who want the stump gone this season, chemical treatment is too slow to be practical.

A Note on Timing in Calgary

Stump grinding can be done almost any time the ground is not frozen solid, which in Calgary means roughly late March through mid-November. If you had a tree removed in winter, you may need to wait until spring for the stump work. We recommend booking stump grinding early in the season, as spring is our busiest time and wait times can stretch to several weeks.

One thing to keep in mind: if you are getting a tree removed, ask about bundling the stump grinding into the same job. It is almost always cheaper to grind the stump while the crew and equipment are already on site.
