Every plumber has a photo of a sewer line packed solid with roots, and every homeowner who sees one starts eyeing the tree in the front yard. The relationship between roots and sewer lines is real, but it is widely misunderstood, and the misunderstanding leads to a lot of unnecessary tree removals.
Roots almost never break into sound pipe. What they do is find an existing weakness, and in older Calgary neighbourhoods those weaknesses are common.
Roots Follow Moisture and Opportunity
Roots grow where conditions favour them: air, moisture, and space. A sound, sealed pipe carrying water offers none of those from the outside, so roots simply grow past it.
Where a pipe has a cracked section, an offset joint, a failed seal, or the loose mortar joints of old clay tile, moisture and vapour escape into the surrounding soil. Roots detect that gradient, grow toward it, and push fine roots through the gap, where they then expand and proliferate in the nutrient-rich flow.
Older Homes Have Older Pipe
The risk concentrates in the parts of the city where laterals are clay tile or older cast iron with jointed sections. Those materials shift over decades of frost heave and settle, and jointed pipe has an opening every few metres by design.
Modern PVC or ABS laterals with solvent-welded joints are far more resistant, though not immune where a joint has failed or a section was damaged during backfill. The age of your service line predicts root intrusion better than the species of your tree.
Which Trees Are Most Involved
Species with aggressive, moisture-seeking root systems show up most often: willow, poplar, silver maple, and elm. That does not mean a willow will find your line, only that if a weakness exists within reach, a willow is more likely to exploit it than a slow-growing spruce.
Distance matters more than most people think. Roots routinely extend two to three times the canopy spread, so a tree twelve metres from the house can absolutely reach the lateral.
What to Do When a Line Blocks
The immediate fix is mechanical: a plumber cuts the roots out with an auger or a high-pressure jetter and restores flow. That solves today's backup and does nothing about tomorrow's, because the roots regrow into the same defect within a year or two.
The real fix is the pipe. A camera inspection shows exactly where the intrusion is and what shape the pipe is in, and options range from spot repair to trenchless lining, which seals the interior and removes the opening entirely. Lining a defective lateral usually ends the problem without touching the tree.
When Removing the Tree Is the Wrong Answer
Removing a mature tree because a plumber pulled roots out of a line is often the most expensive response with the least certain outcome. The defect stays, neighbouring trees are still within reach, and you have lost decades of canopy, shade, and property value.
Consider removal when the tree is otherwise poor, when the intrusion is severe and repeated, and when repair is impractical. Otherwise, fix the pipe and keep the tree. Root barriers can help in some situations, though they need to be properly specified rather than improvised.
Planting to Avoid the Problem
If you are planting new, find out where your water and sewer services run before you dig, and keep large, moisture-seeking species well away from them. Smaller ornamental trees near the house and big shade trees out in the open is a good default.
