Every spring we get a wave of calls from homeowners standing in front of an evergreen that went into winter a healthy green and came out brown, usually worst on the side facing the prevailing wind or the low afternoon sun. Almost everyone assumes the tree froze to death over a cold snap. In the great majority of cases it did not freeze at all. It dried out.
This is winter desiccation, often called winter burn, and Calgary's chinook-driven climate makes us one of the harder places in the country to keep evergreens looking good through to spring. It is worth understanding the mechanism, because once you know what actually causes the browning, the ways to prevent it start to make obvious sense.
Drying Out in the Dead of Winter
Evergreens hold their needles or scale leaves all winter, and those leaves never stop losing a slow trickle of moisture to the air, a process called transpiration. In a normal, mild winter that is no problem, because the tree is dormant and the soil around the roots stays workable enough to quietly resupply the water that is lost.
The trouble begins when the ground freezes solid for a stretch. The roots can no longer pull up any moisture at all, yet the needles keep giving it off, and they lose it fastest on bright, windy, sunny days. When the demand from the foliage outruns a supply that has dropped to zero, the tissue essentially dries to a crisp. That desiccated tissue is the brown, brittle foliage you find waiting for you in spring.
Why Chinooks Make It Worse
A Calgary chinook can swing the temperature from deep, bitter cold to well above freezing in the space of a few hours, and then back again just as fast. That warm sun and dry, gusty wind effectively wake the needles up and pull moisture out of them quickly, exactly when the tree is least able to cope with the loss.
Meanwhile the roots are still locked in ground that is frozen hard, so there is no way to replace what the needles are shedding. That mismatch, thirsty foliage sitting above frozen and unavailable roots, is the precise recipe for winter burn. It is why our evergreens suffer noticeably more than those in regions that get a steady, stable cold winter without the dramatic midwinter thaws.
The Trees Most at Risk
Cedars are the classic Calgary victim, and they brown out in exposed spots almost every winter, but they are far from alone. Young spruce, pine, and yew are all vulnerable, especially newly planted specimens that have not yet grown the deep, wide root system an established tree relies on to find winter moisture. A small root system simply has less to draw from.
Position matters as much as species. Anything on a south or west exposure, in the path of the prevailing wind, or reflecting heat off a nearby wall or fence takes the worst of it. Broadleaf evergreens and tender ornamentals that were pushed slightly past their comfortable hardiness for our zone also tend to burn, while well-established, well-sited native conifers generally come through in good shape.
Protecting Vulnerable Evergreens
The single most effective step costs almost nothing: a deep, thorough soaking in late fall, kept up until the ground actually freezes. A tree that heads into winter fully hydrated, with moisture stored in its tissues and the surrounding soil, has a real reserve to draw on and burns far less than one that went into the cold already dry from a rain-short autumn.
Beyond watering, burlap wind screens on the exposed side, a good insulating layer of mulch over the root zone, and anti-desiccant sprays that slow moisture loss from the foliage all help protect high-risk trees. Placement is part of the solution too. When you plant new evergreens, keeping the most tender ones out of the worst wind-and-sun corners saves you a lot of brown foliage later.
What to Do in Spring
Do not rush to cut a brown evergreen down the moment the snow melts, because a lot of trees that look dead are anything but. Scratch the bark on a twig with your thumbnail; if it is green and flexible just underneath, the buds are very likely still alive and the tree can push a fresh flush of growth once it warms up. Give it until early summer and see what recovers before you remove anything.
