Yellow leaves in spring aren't normal. New growth should be vibrant green by mid-May. When it isn't, the most common diagnosis in Calgary is chlorosis: a failure of the tree to produce chlorophyll, usually due to nutrient deficiency.
The good news is that most cases are treatable. Here's how to figure out what's going on.
What Chlorosis Looks Like
True chlorosis affects the leaf blade but leaves the veins green. The pattern is unmistakable: pale yellow tissue with a dark green network of veins running through it. It usually shows up first on the youngest leaves and progresses to older foliage if untreated.
Don't confuse chlorosis with general yellowing (which could indicate fall colour onset, water stress, or root rot). The green-veined pattern is the telltale sign.
Why Calgary Trees Get Chlorotic
Calgary soils are alkaline, often with pH values between 7.5 and 8.5. At this pH, several nutrients — particularly iron, manganese, and zinc — become chemically unavailable to plant roots even when they're physically present in the soil.
Some species are especially vulnerable: silver maple, pin oak, river birch, white pine, and most cultivated apples and crabapples. These were bred for slightly acidic soils and struggle in Calgary's natural conditions.
Quick Diagnostic: Which Nutrient?
- Iron chlorosis: Yellowing starts on the youngest leaves at the tips of branches. Most common in maples, oaks, and birches.
- Manganese chlorosis: Similar pattern but usually shows up later in the season. Often confused with iron deficiency.
- Nitrogen deficiency: Yellowing starts on OLDER leaves first (the opposite of iron) and spreads upward. Whole-leaf yellowing without the green-vein pattern.
Treatment That Works
- Deep root fertilization: A pressurized injection of a chelated iron + nutrient blend into the root zone bypasses the alkaline soil's chemistry and delivers nutrients directly. This is the most reliable treatment and lasts a full growing season.
- Trunk injection: For severe or chronic cases, injecting iron or micronutrients directly into the tree's vascular system gets results within weeks. More expensive but very effective.
- Soil amendment with sulfur: Over multiple years, applying elemental sulfur around the drip line slowly lowers soil pH and improves nutrient availability. This is a long-term fix, not a quick one.
What Doesn't Work
Surface-applied fertilizer rarely fixes chlorosis. The nutrients can't penetrate to where the roots are, and even if they did, alkaline soil locks them up again.
Foliar iron sprays give short-term cosmetic improvement (green-up within days) but the effect fades quickly. They're a band-aid, not a cure.
Adding compost or peat moss to the surface helps soil structure but rarely shifts pH enough to fix chronic chlorosis on its own.
When to Just Replant
Some trees are so poorly suited to Calgary soil that fighting chlorosis every year is a losing battle. Silver maple in particular is a chronic patient. If you're treating the same tree every spring and seeing the same yellow leaves, consider replacing it with a species that thrives here: bur oak, hackberry, Kentucky coffeetree, or one of the hardy elm cultivars.
Yellow leaves with green veins are the soil whispering: your tree isn't getting what it needs. The good news is it's usually fixable.
